During Level 6, you’ll complete a minimum of 15 hours of clinical supervision practice with supervisees, allowing you to develop and demonstrate your supervisory skills within real professional practice.

You’ll also complete a minimum of 5 hours of supervisory supervision with a senior or experienced clinical supervisor. This may be undertaken individually or within a group, alongside regular supervision-of-supervision activities within the training course.

Throughout the course, you’ll continue to work as a practising counsellor under supervision, ensuring that your development as a supervisor remains grounded in your own ongoing therapeutic practice.

Your supervision practice, supervisory supervision and continuing client work form an integral part of the course, enabling you to apply your learning within real supervisory relationships while developing your confidence, professional identity and competence as a clinical supervisor.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous throughout the course and is designed to demonstrate the development of your supervisory knowledge, practical skills, reflective practice and ability to work effectively within real clinical supervision relationships.

There is no final written examination. Instead, you will build a portfolio of evidence across the year which includes:

  • Two written assignments of 2,500 words

  • Learning reviews and reflective work

  • A record of your 15 hours of supervision practice

  • A record of your 5 hours of supervisory supervision

  • Two tutor-observed supervision practice sessions

  • Two case presentations

  • Two supervisor reports

  • Self-review and ongoing assessment of your development

  • Peer feedback

  • Evidence gathered through workshops, group work, tutorials and training supervision

To achieve the qualification, you must demonstrate proficiency across all seven CPCAB learning outcomes and meet all qualification requirements, including the required supervision practice and supervisory supervision hours.

Your assessment is integrated throughout the course, allowing you to demonstrate not only your theoretical understanding of supervision, but how you apply that learning safely, ethically and effectively within real supervisory practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be aged 19 or over and hold the CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4), a CPCAB Level 5 practitioner qualification, or an equivalent recognised counselling qualification.

Applicants must also have completed a minimum of 450 supervised client hours. This reflects the advanced, post-practitioner nature of Level 6 supervision training and ensures that students bring sufficient therapeutic experience, professional maturity and understanding of client work to begin developing safely into the clinical supervisor role. CPCAB recommends 450 hours as the minimum practice experience for entry to TCSU-L6.

Applicants must be working as counsellors under supervision and need access to suitable supervisees during the course in order to complete the required supervision practice.

As this is advanced post-practitioner training, applicants need to demonstrate readiness to develop their work at a greater level of professional responsibility, complexity and autonomy.

When considering applications, we will look for:

• The academic and emotional capacity to work at Level 6
• Substantial experience of therapeutic counselling practice
• Self-awareness, insight, honesty and integrity
• The ability to work sensitively with difference and diversity
• The personal qualities required to form and sustain effective supervisory relationships
• The ability to challenge and be challenged appropriately
• The ability to respond sensitively and empathically to others
• Openness to personal development and reflective learning
• The ability to model professional attitudes and behaviour
• Readiness to take on the professional responsibilities associated with clinical supervision

Important: Level 6 involves experiential learning, personal disclosure and engagement with complex therapeutic and supervisory material. Applicants need to be sufficiently emotionally and psychologically able to engage safely with the demands of advanced practitioner training.

Learning Statement

As part of the application process, you will be asked to submit a Learning Statement of up to 500 words.

This is an opportunity to explain why you are applying for the course, how you intend to use the qualification in the future, and how your existing counselling experience, knowledge and skills will support your development as a clinical supervisor.

The Learning Statement also forms an important part of our selection process, allowing us to consider your readiness for Level 6 study and your ability to communicate and reflect effectively in written academic work.
